Hi Ladies,I’m here to support you as the 2023 Rules Chair for WOWGG. Thank you, Elsa, for all the helpful rules clarifications in 2022, and the way you applied them to WCC golf course situations was great. Please everyone, send me rules questions, with photos if possible, so I can show the rules relevant to our course. Send to deedee.owen@gmail.com or text me at 408-234-5017. I’m going to start with one of the new rules of 2023 that is very applicable to our play – DROPPING WHEN TAKING BACK-ON-THE-LINE RELIEF. Let me know if you have any questions!Dee Dee OwenRules Chair 2023
WOWGG – January 2023 Rule of the Month
Back-on-the-Line Relief Procedure: The back-on-the-line relief procedure, often used for penalty area and unplayable ball relief, has been simplified so that the player now drops their ball on the line, and the ball must come to rest within one club-length of where it is dropped. How does that change from 2022? Here is how we did it in 2022: Any back-on-the-line situation applies to this diagram – for taking relief from yellow or red penalty areas, unplayable lies, abnormal course conditions including in bunkers. Number 2 in diagram shows the 2022 rule. You designate a reference point (the dot in 2) on the line behind spot (X) where ball entered the penalty area extending to the pin, as far back as you want. Relief area is a half-circle, one club-length around from that point, no closer to the pin.You drop the ball ANYWHERE inside that half-circle. If ball rolls OUT of that half-circle, drop again.
New procedure for 2023Instead of dropping from ANYWHERE inside that half-circle, you must drop it ON THE LINE to the pin. The ball can roll up to one club length in ANY direction, including TOWARDS the pin. Now, instead of a half-circle, there is a complete circle, from the reference point where you dropped it (on the line to the hole), to where the ball can roll. It must be more than a club-length back from the point you entered the penalty area.
This is the half-circle from 2022 rules
Now we have a full circle, including closer-to-the-hole
